One of our absolute favorites. We've traveled over 10,000 km in seventeen years but when my parents spent a couple of weeks discovering Costa Rica with us it was once in a lifetime. We wanted to make sure they saw the best of the best and this loop was a big part of what we did.

Day 1 — Trogón Lodge (3 Nights)Trogón Lodge (3 Nights)
Your VIP airport greeter will get you smoothly on your way up to the cloud forests of San Gerardo de Dota in the Paso Sangrea of Copey where Trogón Lodge awaits at 7,000 feet amidst centennial oak trees. In the heart of some of the best birdwatching in Costa Rica you'll have three days to enjoy the trails right outside the door of your Savegre river view or cloud forest view room.

Day 2 — The Elusive Resplendent Quetzal
Not surprisingly this region around the new Los Quetzales National Park is the best area in all of Costa Rica to spot the eponymous and elusive Resplendent Quetzal. A bilingual naturalist guide will lead you to the best area of the cloud forest based on recent sightings, use his skills in mimicking the call of the males to attract them, and provide a high quality scope for viewing and photographing these magnificent birds.

Day 3 — Trogon Canopy Ziplines
Be sure to eat a light breakfast! Today you will go on a high speed, high flying canopy zipline adventure. On this gravity defying adventure, you will soar through the canopy of the cloud forest on zipline cables, suspended by wheel and harness.

For those who'd like a slower pace substitute the naturalist guided walk below.

Catarata Savegre Trailmore photos >>Catarata Savegre Trail
A guide will accompany you on a well maintained trail along the Río Savegre with railed stairs on steep sections and a steel bridge so you can cross the river to reach the first waterfall easily and safely (1.2 km one way). This is sometimes called cave falls because of the opening that allows you to get behind the water.

From here the trail gets a little steeper and rougher for the last 0.7 km to the spectacular Catarata Savegre (total 1.9 km one way).

Day 4 — Hacienda Barú (3 Nights)more photos >>Hacienda Barú (3 Nights)
Hacienda Barú is one of the most incredible spots we have found in nearly two decades of traveling throughout Costa Rica exploring every nook and cranny.

Set in the heart of the Hacienda Barú wildlife refuge a short walk through the trees up from the 'private' beach there's a cluster of rooms facing the pool and six two bedroom family style cabins with kitchens that serve as a base for exploring the trails through the wet forests, estuaries, along the beach and up the backing hills to an incredible view.

Day 5 — Tree Tops at Hacienda Baru
A professional guide will accompany you on a thrilling tree climb into the canopy of the rainforest. No experience necessary. After a safety briefing, your guide will assist you the entire way.

Or you can choose to be hoisted by an electric winch up to a canopy platform, where you will be able to observe the canopy of the rainforest. You'll learn about the canopy ecology first hand while viewing tropical birds and other wildlife that spend most of their lives in the treetops

Day 6 — Wildlife Refuge Exploration
Jack Ewing has been restoring 815 acres around a core of primary growth with loving care since 1972 and has built one of the best spots around for birdwatchers and nature lovers. As a guest you have full access to the reserve and today is yours to explore and enjoy the nature trails to the mangroves, turtle nesting project, observation tower or up the fila to the mirador with incredible views over Dominical.

Day 7 — Adiós ¡Hasta Luego!Adiós ¡Hasta Luego!
Get up early to enjoy one last stroll on the trails or catch the early set on Playa Domincal then head up the coast. We'll make sure you're at the international airport in plenty of time to catch your flight home. Thank you for traveling with us and of course ¡Pura Vida!
