FAQ for the PDF Atlas of Costa Rica

99% of all problems are caused by an outdated version of ®Acrobat reader—If you are experiencing difficulties opening, saving, viewing or printing ®Adobe PDF documents the most likely problem is an old version of the reader on your computer(s).
This is a brand new edition of the Costa Rica Atlas (March 2005), and in order to maximize the features we've upgraded to Version 7.0.0. The problems we've encountered so far have all been solved by installing the latest ®Acrobat reader.
You can dowload the free ®Adobe reader here.

It only takes a few minutes, and you'll enjoy having the new improved features when using any PDF file (the search feature has been greatly improved from earlier versions!)

I get an error "File is damaged and cannot be repaired"The pdf file is not corrupted. The error message "this file is corrupted and cannot be repaired" is a software bug in pre 2005 versions of the ®Adobe reader. Please get ®Adobe reader 7.0 before downloading maps.
About 1 out of 5,000 downloads appear to actually suffer some damage in transit over the internet (possibly slightly more on a poor quality phone connection). However, the most likely reason for this error is that the most recent ®Adobe reader (Version 7.0.0) is not installed.
If ®Adobe reader (Vesion 7.0.0) is installed (to check open the reader and click Help>>About Adobe Reader 7.0...) and you still recieve this error, please first erase the ToucanCostaRica.pdf from your computer (drag it to the recycle bin), then visit this link to re-download.

I downloaded the Atlas, but now I can't find it—We can't tell you exactly where it is because that depends on your system settings, and any new name you assigned to the file during download. Typically downloads can be found on the desktop, or in MyDocuments.
If you did not rename the file it should be easy to locate by clicking Start>>Search>>For Files or Folders... and then choosing Documents and entering ToucanCostaRica in the "All or part of the document name:" box. If you renamed the file enter the new name in the "All or part of the document name:" box.
If you can't find the file visit this link to re-download.

I got the Atlas, but not the Indexes. Where are they?—The indexes are included as an attachment. When you have the Atlas open in ®Adobe reader, click the tab on the lower left corner labeled "Attachments," then click on Indexes.pdf >>See Screenshots showing how
the indexes are separated into an attachment to facilitate searching. When you do a search in the Atlas, clicking on one of the results will display that location on the appropriate map. If you would like to include the Indexes in your search please select "Use Advanced Search Options," then click the "Include Attachments" check box.

Where are the .jpg, .gif, and .png files?Click Here to Download.

I forgot my username and/or password for downloads.—Click Here, then enter your e-mail address in the "Lost Password?) box.

I'm using Windows 98 and cannot install ®Adobe reader Version 7.0— The Atlas can be opened on many machines running ®Adobe reader version 6.0.2 or higher under Windows 98SE operating systems. Note, you will need the latest upgrade of ®Adobe reader version 6. Ignore the message stating "This file appears to have been created with a newer version..." Some of the search functions may be depricated, and we cannot guarantee compatability.

May I please have a one page version of the whole country (all 11 atlas pages compressed into one) in PDF format?—Yes. However, the price may shock you. Licensing for these filesstarts at $15,000 per year. If you would like details please contact us. One page versions in .jpg, .gif, and .png formats for use as GPS basemaps, or to slice up and include in your website, movies or Christmas cards are available to all owners of a Toucan Guides Map for free by clicking here.

May I use the PDF Atlas or part of it on my website?—No. If you would like to include maps or map sections in your website, movies or Christmas cards please use the .jpg, .gif, and .png files available to all owners of a Toucan Guides Map for free by clicking here.

May I use the PDF Atlas, part of it, or any other files or information from mapCR.com or Toucan Guides in my business? No, but we'll be happy to create custom content for your business and discuss business licensing with you. Please contact us.
