A friendly, gringo-run surfers’ hostel with some rooms in the main house, a row of thatched A-frames with refrigerators and a popular beachside restaurant. Waves are good right in front of the hotel. They rent surfboards and have a shady seaside hammock area.

Wavehunters (888-899-8823; wavehunters.com) puts together five- to seven-day surfing trips based at Las Olas, including transport from San José for $600-$1000/person.
