The nicest place to stay in this area is Guayabo Lodge. Perched on the slopes of Turrialba volcano, only half an hour from the center of town, it is the perfect starting place for peaceful birding walks, trips to the village of Aquiares, with its charming hand-painted church, or mountain biking to Guayabo. The hotel is designed with European grace by the Dutch owner, with a sunny dining area, and cozy sitting area with sofas and a tiled fireplace. The rooms are decorated with elegant fabrics and have mountain and valley views that delight the eye. A spacious area on the first floor has become a gourmet cooking school. Breakfasts include delicious European baked goods, and other meals are available on request. Recommended.
