Dr. Archie Carr Wildlife RefugeTortuguero, Costa Rica
Text©Beatrice Blake-New Key to Costa Rica Long-term biological research on the green turtle, started by the Caribbean Conservation Corp. in 1954, has helped greatly in understanding and preserving this species. Dr. Archie Carr, the founder of CCC, wrote an entertaining and informative book, The Windward Road (see the CCC website), about his wanderings in search of the green turtles’ nesting ground, which finally led him to Tortuguero. Thanks to international interest in Carr’s work, Tortuguero was declared a national park in 1970 by the Costa Rican government. Today Tortuguero is the premier center for turtle monitoring in the world. Website & Contactphone: (506)2297-5510 U.S. 352-373-6441 toll free 800-678-7853 |
