Monteverde Cloud Forest (field station open daily, 7 a.m. to 4 p.m.; www.cct.or.cr, admission $15, children 6-12 and students with ID $7.50, children under 6 free), you can walk along the well-maintained trails with a map available at the field station. Guided tours start at 7:30 a.m.. noon and 1:30 p.m. ; ($15 plus entrance fee, 9-person maximum). There are also private tours for two to four people, $90 plus entrance fee). Birding hikes leave Stellas’s Bakery at 6 a.m. (minumum two, maximum 6 people, $50 per person, 6 hours) and hike up to the reserve. Night hikes in the reserve begin daily at 7:15 p.m. ($15 plus entrance fee, $17 including round trip transport). Call 2645-5122 or e-mail recepcion-mtv@cct.or,cr to arrange any of the above tours or have your hotel arrange them. These guided hikes, are given by naturalists with years of experience in the cloud forest. You will be shown wonders that your eyes alone would probably never catch. In addition to the beautiful fauna and flora, other highlights of a hike in the reserve are a cascading waterfall, a mirador with stunning views of the area, and a 328-foot-long suspension bridge spanning the forest canopy.Quetzals feed on the tiny, avocado-like fruits of aguacatillo trees. They are most visible in the early morning from January through June, especially during the mating season from February to May, but we talked to happy tourists who had seen them in November and December, too.
