An aerial tram designed and built by the famous Austrian ski-lift company, Doppelmayr. The silent electric funiculars glide slowly over a kilometer-long route to a platform that is so close to Arenal Volcano you can hear the sound of ejected rocks as you watch them tumble down the mountain. At the platform, guides harness participants and give them instructions for the Arenal version of the SkyTrek zipline canopy tour. Participants can try two practice zips before embarking on cables that range from 100 feet to half a mile in length, at times as much as 650 feet in the air. As on the Monteverde SkyTrek, guides apply the brakes, so participants don’t have to worry about how to control their landings. Unlike the Monteverde version, there is no walking between cables. A photographer goes with each group (maximum 12 participants). Those that don’t want to zip can take a 30 to 45-minute guided hike near the platform. or visit the orchid and butterfly gardens near the entrance. Take a lightweight jacket—it can be chilly up there. The Skytram and Skytrek are in El Castillo, on the west side of the volcano. Recommended.
$66 adults, $52 students, $40 kids 8-13. Tram only: $55 adults, $44 students, $28 kids 6-10, under 5 free; tours at 7:30, 9, 10:30 and 11:30 a.m., 2 and 3 p.m. including transportation from your hotel
