Staying at Rancho La Merced is a great way to explore the area on foot or on horseback. Lodging is in a nicely decorated two-bedroom cabin in the hills($80 per person, including meals and a birding tour). Toucans were just hanging out in the lush garden next to the cabin when we were there. The cabin is located on the road to Oro Verde, but the reception is at Rancho La Merced’s stables on the main highway opposite the road to Oro Verde. You can also be a “cowboy for a day” at their ranch. Recommended.
