The farm and gardens provide an example of how self-sufficient organic communities can work, and the farm involves the local community as much as possible. The huge ethnobotanical garden, designed by the famous horticulturist and author Rafael Ocampo, brings together plants from all over the world. At the organic farm, foraging pigs do the plowing, then carefully prepared organic biodynamic compost is applied. Crops, flowers, herbs and trees are planted together in a way that creates synergy between them, avoiding the pitfalls of the monoculture model that has dominated agriculture in recent history. EARTH University in Guápiles sends its students to Finca Luna Nueva to see what permaculture is all about, and classes in sustainable living are offered at the farm. Sample a stirfry or a salad at Luna Nueva, and you will experience the taste sensations that can only come from an incredible variety of freshly picked organic ingredients. The lodge has very comfortable rooms with wide verandas above its spacious open air dining room and meeting space, as well as 3-person cabins and 2-bedroom cabins that sleep six. A separate building has air-conditioning for those who require it. All rooms are furnished with rich natural fabrics in harmonious tones. Guests can cool off in a natural fresh-water pool and or relax in a solar-heated hot tub with Jacuzzi. There is a wheelchair accessible path through their rainforest reserve. Transportation to the volcano can be arranged for about $20. Finca Luna Nueva welcomes volunteers who are fluent in Spanish and can commit to a minimum of three months. Recommended.
